Call centre operator Teletech has closed its office in Pennant Hills, Sydney, according to Federal Member for Berowra Philip Ruddock, resulting in 173 staff losing their jobs.

I feel deeply for the staff who will find it difficult to find jobs in a tight and competitive industry.

Philip Ruddock

"Teletech is located in the building where my electorate office is situated and on the 26 May 2009, Centrelink notified the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations that Teletech would be making 173 staff redundant in Pennant Hills," Ruddock said in a release last week. The redundancies were to take place by Friday 29 May.

"The redundancies have been attributed to the program (managed by Teletech) moving off shore," Rudduck said. Teletech is a US-based company.

Ruddock said the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations has made contact with the company to offer information to workers about help they can receive.

"I feel deeply for the staff who will find it difficult to find jobs in a tight and competitive industry," Ruddock said. Teletech has as yet not responded to requests for comment.
