VMware upbeat about 2014 prospects

For 2013, VMware reported earnings of $1.01 billion, or $2.34 a share, on revenue of $5.21 billion, up 13 percent from a year ago.

VMware delivered fourth quarter results and said it was optimistic about its 2014 prospects. The earnings were in line with what the company projected when it announced the acquisition of AirWatch.

The virtualization company reported fourth quarter earnings of $335 million, or 77 cents a share, on revenue of $1.48 billion, up 15 percent from a year ago. Non-GAAP earnings were $1.01 a share. The results reflect divestitures related to the launch of Pivotal, EMC's big data play. EMC is the majority owner of VMware too.

For 2013, VMware reported earnings of $1.01 billion, or $2.34 a share, on revenue of $5.21 billion, up 13 percent from a year ago.

VMware held cash and equivalents of $6.18 billion at the end of 2013. The company provided an outlook for 2014 when it announced the AirWatch deal.

For the fourth quarter, VMware said license revenue was $687 million with services revenue of $796 million.

And revenue is roughly evenly split between international and U.S.
