Just over a year since the commercial launch of its 4G network, Telstra has sold close to 1 million devices, according to Telstra's head of prepaid devices, Stuart Bird.
Telstra has launched 13 4G devices into the Australian market since introducing its 4G network in Australia last year. The network covers approximately 40 percent of the population, and Telstra aims to have it reach 66.6 percent by the end of June 2013.
At last report, at the end of October, CEO David Thodey said that Telstra had sold 820,000 devices since launch, including 405,000 handsets of which over 100,000 are iPhone 5 devices.
But in just over three weeks, Telstra has edged close to the 1 million mark, according to Bird, who dropped the news last night at the Frost & Sullivan Excellence Awards, when Telstra was awarded the Mobile Service Provider of the Year Award.
"We're about to talk to the media about bringing up close to 1 million customers on 4G at Telstra, a wonderful achievement," he said.
Telstra today wouldn't confirm whether the company has reached 1 million 4G devices sold, instead pointing to the earlier announcement of 820,000 devices sold.
Optus — which has a 4G network in Newcastle, Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth — has not revealed how many 4G devices it has sold. When asked for the figures during a recent call with journalists, consumer CEO Kevin Russell declined to say how many 4G customers Optus has picked up since launching the network to consumers in July.
