Chinese developer studies gamer behavior to improve products

Giant will work with China Telecom in Shanghai to set up a big data analytics facility to study gamer behavior and habits, and apply these into future product designs.

Chinese online games developer, Giant, is working with China Telecom in Shanghai to set up a big data analytics facility and study user behavior, so it can improve future game designs.

The two partners have already begun jointly developing technologies based on big data research with the first of such efforts to be applied on Giant's new online game, called Jianghu, reported China Tech News. Jianghu, which refers to the Chinese martial arts world, the game is slated for launch next month. 

No financial details about the deal were released. 

According to the report, the data analytics center will tap user data from both companies and study gamer bahavior as well as habits. The research will help Giant better understand user behavior while playing games, and apply the knowledge to improve user experience in future game designs. 

Founded in November 2004, the online games developer's flagship ZT Online MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-playing game) was one of few games worldwide in May 2007 to hit more than 1 million peak concurrent users, before growing past 2.1 million peak concurrent users in April 2008, stated Giant's website.

China Telecom's Shanghai outlet had used big data to improve its internal operational efficiency as well as customer experience. The Chinese telco also offers big data services to enterprise clients, and earlier this year set up a cloud operating center.
