Salesforce says it will no longer support Internet Explorer versions 7 and 8 when it releases its platform refresh in the summer of 2015.
For the few Salesforce customers who still use IE 7 or 8 (less than 5 percent and 20 percent, respectively), this means functionality that previously worked may cease, and that bugs and performance issues will no longer be investigated.
Salesforce is following Microsoft's lead by axing support for the outdated browsers. Having released IE7 in 2006 and IE8 in 2009, Microsoft will sound the browsers' death knell come January 2016. Microsoft has already ended mainstream support for IE7 and IE8 on the XP and Vista operating systems, with the Windows 7 OS to follow suit at the start of the new year.
Among the litany of reasons for ending IE7 and IE8 support, Salesforce pointed out the fact that the browsers are not HTML5 compatible, which is of course the new Internet standard. This means the browsers are incapable of supporting the rich Internet apps Salesforce customers commonly use, and the technology that will certainly be at the core of future Salesforce features.
Salesforce also reiterated the security issues tied to IE7 and IE8, such as the vulnerability found in May 2013 that allowed for remote code execution.
