A volcano erupts on the sea floor

The eruption of an underwater volcano in the Mariana Arc, south of Guam, is captured on film by a team of researchers.

Eruption

A team of researchers from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration captured rare images of the eruption of an underwater volcano in the Mariana Arc, south of Guam.

The volcano, called NW Rota-1, was discovered in 2004 and has since been visited several times by international teams of explorers, according to NOAA.

Sulfur-coated lava

Pieces of lava coated in yellow sulfur stand out at the leading edge of an advancing lava flow on the sea floor at NW Rota-1 volcano. The volcano is believed to erupt frequently, and possibly continuously.
