LG shows off Optimus Froyo Android phones

LG has announced a new line of Android devices, starting with two new handsets. It also promised tablet PCs that use Google's mobile operating system.

Unveiled on Monday, the first of the two Android phones is what LG calls the "Optimus One with Google", pictured above. The second handset, the Optimus Chic, is not described as being "with Google".

LG was unable to clarify whether this means the Optimus One is a 'Google experience' phone — a device that receives over-the-air firmware updates from Google itself, and tends to get the latest version of the Android operating system before others. Both the Optimus One and Optimus Chic will be launched with Android 2.2, or 'Froyo'.

LG has not released any specifications or availability dates for the new phones. The company did say, however, that it will introduce approximately 10 new Optimus "smart devices" in the second half of 2010, ranging from entry to premium level, "as part of its aggressive strategy to grow its share of the global smartphone market".

As no specs have been released, it remains difficult to compare the internals of the device with the Optimus One, but LG has said that the Chic "caters to fashion aficionados with its tasteful design incorporating soft and smooth lines".
