Facebook sent out e-mail invitations to Bay Area reporters and bloggers on Monday evening to announce an event at 10:00 a.m. Pacific time Wednesday at its Palo Alto, Calif., headquarters. The wording is vague: "Join Us for an Event."

The massive social-networking company has been launching an unusually heavy number of product initiatives in the past few months, from a gaming notifications overhaul to enhancements to its Facebook Photos product to the long-anticipated Facebook Places geolocation launch in August.

The invitation's use of the word "event" might hint that Facebook Events, the social network's invitation service, is getting a revamp (something AllFacebook's Nick O'Neill also noticed). Late this summer, when Facebook formally acquired event "check-in" service Hot Potato, multiple sources told CNET that Hot Potato CEO Justin Shaffer--the real reason for the $10 million acquisition--had been enlisted to revamp Facebook Events. It hasn't been long since Shaffer formally joined Facebook, but given the company's reputation for late-night "hackathons," restructuring Facebook Events in a matter of weeks would not be out of the question.
