Among 2010 model cars available in the U.S. the EPA says nine of the ten best for fuel efficiency are hybrids. Only the Smart Car from Daimler, with really just a two-person capacity, made it into the top ten. Prius again led the fleet. Others in top ten included: Ford Fusion, its Mercury Milan twin, Honda's Civic and Insight, Nissan's Altima.
Unless those oil futures drop well below $77, it looks like the future of autos is going to revolve around battery tech, not bigger engines.
