Shazam Encore
Price: Free (limited time)
Platform: BlackBerry
We like this "compliments of BlackBerry" thing — the free apps that RIM is giving away as a thank you for being patient during the recent service interruptions. This week, we found Shazam Encore — the app that helps you figure out what a song is based on the tune. It's free until the end of the year, after which it will revert back to US$5.99, so snap it up while it lasts.

Platform: iOS (iPhone)
Ingogo, created by the team that started Moshtix, puts you in contact with the nearest taxi to you. You can request a driver using your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch and check your driver's location in real time. From December, you'll also be able to pay using your mobile. Taxi drivers using ingogo devices are validated to meet strict transport legislative requirements, meaning that the drivers are real drivers, which ingogo sees as its differentiating feature from other taxi apps. It's available in Sydney, and is looking to launch in other cities.

Pepsi Max Top Mates
Price: Free
Platform: iOS (iPhone)
This one's a tad frivolous — if you really want to spend time with your mates, but can't seem to get free, the app provides a fake excuse to disguise where you are, supported by pictures and sound effects. Have fun ... but in moderation.
