As Black Friday approaches, a few more tech retailers are seeing their ads released to join the multitude. One of the heaviest hitters, Newegg, has been constantly churning out pre-Black Friday deals, but has chosen a more understated strategy for the huge shopping weekend, offering only a single-page flyer.
Even more frustrating, many of the tech sales promoted in the ad don't have a price listed with them -- we're teased with "see website for best price." That's the case for the Dell Venue 8-inch tablet, which we've seen going for as low as $129.99 in that company's own Black Friday ad, as well as the Asus VivoBook S400CA Ultrabook (Intel Core i5 processor, 4GB of RAM, 500GB hard drive, 24GB of solid-state storage, 14-inch touchscreen). As a point of reference, TigerDirect is selling a 15.6-inch version of the VivoBook with 6GB of RAM but otherwise similar specs for $449.99.
The one PC deal Newegg is advertising in its Black Friday flyer that does include a price is the Asus G10AC-US011S gaming desktop. Currently available on Newegg's site for $1,199.99, the sale price will be $300 less (though that includes a $75 mail-in rebate) for the tower, which includes a Core i7-4770 Haswell quad-core processor, 8 gigs of RAM, terabyte hard drive, and Nvidia GeForce GTX 760 graphics card. You also get a copy of Assassin's Creed 4 as a free bonus.
Regional chain Fry's Electronic is well-known to West Coast geeks, and it's using its Black Friday ad to help customers alleviate one of that day's shopping pain points. It lets you reserve your choice from over 500 items starting on Thanksgiving at 9 a.m., and then pick it up at your local Fry's anytime on Black Friday.
Surprisingly, Fry's doesn't list an enormous roster of PC specials, mostly limiting them to the first page of the ad. You do need to dig a little deeper to find its deal on the Amazon Kindle Fire HD 8.9" for $169.99, which matches the price Office Depot and OfficeMax will be selling it for. However, its $229 deal on the Microsoft Surface RT 32GB with keyboard cover is actually $20 less than TigerDirect and Staples are offering. Finally, Fry's is slashing $50 off the price for Lenovo's Yoga 10 Android tablet, which will be available on Black Friday for $249.
Like Newegg, Fry's has a special on one Ultrabook: The Samsung NP540U3C-A03UB comes with a Core i5-3317U Ivy Bridge CPU, 4GB of RAM, 500GB hard drive and 24GB SSD, and 13.3-inch touchscreen for $498, or $350 off the current price on Frys.com. If you're looking for a dirt-cheap notebook, there's a 14-inch Asus with an Intel Celeron dual-core processor, 4GB of RAM, and 320GB hard drive for just $174, or a 15.6-inch Asus with Core i3 chip for $278 instead. For those who need more power, there's a Sony Vaio Fit 14E laptop with Core i7-3537U Ivy Bridge CPU, 6GB of RAM, 750GB hard drive, and 14-inch touchscreen for $698, or $200 less than the current price.
Also like Newegg, there's a lone desktop Black Friday deal from Fry's, but for much cheaper. The Lenovo H515 tower features an AMD A6-5200 processor, 6GB of RAM, terabyte hard drive, and DVD drive for $258, or a whopping $290 less than the price today.
